TRANSPORTATION BOARD AWARDS TWO CONTRACTS TOTALING $13.9 MILLION FOR ROAD IMPROVEMENTS IN HAYWOOD COUNTY RALEIGH — The N.C. Board of Transportation awarded two contracts totaling $13.9 million for road improvements in Haywood County at its monthly meeting today in Raleigh. The N.C. Board of Transportation awarded two contracts totaling $13.9 million for road improvements in Haywood County at its monthly meeting today in Raleigh. The contracts include: - Replacing the bridge over Jonathan Creek and its approaches on Fox Run Road (State Road 1309). The $1 million contract was awarded to R.E. Burns and Sons Company Inc. of Statesville. Work can begin as soon as March 1, 2008, with completion set for Dec. 31, 2008; and
- Repaving 14.8 miles of and replacing signs on I-40 from the Tennessee state line to Exit 15 (Fine’s Creek). The $12.9 million contract was awarded to the Asheville Division of APAC-Atlantic Inc. Work can begin as soon as Nov. 26, with completion set for June 15, 2009.
The repaving project is funded through Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicles, commonly referred to as GARVEE bonds. GARVEE bonds allow the acceleration of federal funding to help finance projects sooner and avoid increases due to construction inflation. They were authorized by the N.C. General Assembly in 2005 and are issued by the Office of the State Treasurer. "These projects will help provide motorists with an improved and safer infrastructure as they travel through this area," said board member Conrad Burrell of Sylva who represents Highway Division 14, which includes Haywood County.
